OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAHOW BAUSELE IS LEADING THE WAY

In Christophe Hoppe is a rare breed in the vibrant and evolving world of horology. The founder of Bausele, one of Australia’s pioneering independent watch brands, has carved a path defined by innovation, resilience, and an unshakable connection to the Australian spirit.

The Australian watch industry, just decades old, contrasts sharply with Europe’s centuries of tradition. Bausele became the first Australian brand to use Swiss movements, a bold move that elevated the nation’s watchmaking. Christophe’s decision to leave Europe for Australia was bold. However, it unlocked opportunities that redefined his craft. This decision paid off, allowing him to earn global respect and pave the way for other Australian brands to follow.

Bausele’s beginnings were humble—just five watches sold in its first year—but the brand’s trajectory was anything but ordinary. Today, it has grown into a symbol of authentic Australian craftsmanship, gaining recognition for integrating elements of the land into its designs. Christophe’s watches don’t just tell time; they tell stories, each one infused with meaning.

“Time is the only thing we all agree on,” Christophe reflects. “A minute is a minute, no matter where you are. But a watch—well, a watch is so much more. It’s a connection to a moment, a feeling, a story.”

A VISION ROOTED IN PASSION

Christophe’s vision for Bausele was born from a deep love for craftsmanship and storytelling. Early on, he realised that his brand needed something unique to stand out. His solution was inspired: tiny pieces of Australia—red earth, sand, and even coral—embedded in the crown of every watch.

These tangible connections to the land have resonated deeply with customers in Australia and overseas. “Many of our customers live abroad,” he explains. “They want to look at their wrist and feel like they’re on holiday in Australia. It’s about evoking a sense of place, but in a classy and authentic way—no clichés.”

This philosophy of creating meaningful watches sets Bausele apart in a crowded market. While other brands focus on luxury and precision, Bausele focuses on connection. Each timepiece becomes a story, a keepsake, a conversation starter.

TRIUMPHANT MILESTONES

Extraordinary milestones have marked Bausele’s journey. The brand has consistently pushed boundaries, from creating a commemorative watch for the centenary of the Royal Australian Air Force to crafting timepieces containing tiles from the Sydney Opera House.

“When we made the centenary watch for the Royal Australian Air Force, I had to pinch myself,” Christophe admits. “I’m just a little immigrant who came to Australia 15 years ago, and here I was, contributing to something so meaningful.”

These projects are more than business successes; they are moments that connect Bausele to Australia’s cultural and historical identity. “Having the opportunity to work with something as iconic as the Sydney Opera House was surreal,” he says. “We crushed pieces of its tile and embedded them in the watches. It’s an honour to carry those stories forward.”

THE EVOLUTION OF A BRAND

Over the years, Bausele has matured into a brand embodying heritage and innovation. Christophe attributes this growth to the team’s deliberate pause to re-evaluate its identity.

“We asked ourselves, ‘Who are we? What are we doing?’” he recalls. “We realised that being an Australian watch brand sets us apart. So, we leaned into that, and now it shines through in everything we do—from the product to the communication.”

This clarity of purpose has propelled Bausele to new heights, including participation in Geneva Watch Days, the second-largest watch fair in the world. “I had to pinch myself,” Christophe says. “To be there alongside brands like Bulgari and Breitling—it was surreal.”

Participation in international events has also allowed Bausele to build relationships within the global watchmaking community. For Christophe, these opportunities underscore the importance of collaboration and storytelling in keeping his brand relevant.

WATCHES WITH MEANING

At its core, Bausele’s success lies in its ability to connect with people on a personal level. Christophe’s dedication to engaging with his customers is unparalleled. “I’ve spoken to almost every one of our buyers,” he says. “Even if it’s just a short email, that connection matters. It’s not about selling a watch; it’s about sharing a passion.”

For Christophe, the meaning behind a watch goes beyond its mechanical intricacies. “Most of my collectors tell me they wear their watch because it reminds them of a special moment—an anniversary, a milestone, or a feeling,” he shares. “A watch is more than a timepiece; it’s a vessel for memories.”

Christophe’s commitment to authenticity extends to his design process. Every Bausele watch is crafted to be both functional and symbolic, blending clean aesthetics with thoughtful details. “I want my dials to be as clean as possible,” he says. “Straight away, you should know what time it is without unnecessary distractions.”

NAVIGATING CHALLENGES

The watch industry is notoriously competitive, and independent brands often struggle to establish themselves. Yet Christophe remains undeterred.

“We’ve sold close to 18,000 watches now,” he says. “It’s taken a lot of work, a lot of setbacks, but the passion has always driven me forward. This isn’t just a business—it’s my life’s work.”

Economic challenges have also tested the brand’s resilience. “The last couple of years have been tough,” Christophe admits. “When people are struggling to pay their mortgages, buying a $2,000 watch isn’t a priority. But we’ve adapted, found new ways to connect, and kept moving forward.”

LOOKING AHEAD

As Bausele continues to evolve, Christophe remains focused on what matters most: creating authentic, meaningful designs that resonate with people. His advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is simple yet profound: “Take care of yourself—mentally, physically, emotionally. If you’re not in a good place, you can’t create something extraordinary.”

Christophe’s daily routine reflects this philosophy. Swimming in the ocean each morning is not just a form of exercise but a ritual of mental clarity and renewal. “It’s what keeps me going,” he says. “Being an entrepreneur is tough, but starting my day in the water gives me the energy and focus I need.”

Looking to the future, Christophe is optimistic about how independent brands like Bausele can shape the watch industry. By staying true to its roots and embracing innovation, Bausele will continue breaking the mould.

A LEGACY IN THE MAKING

Christophe and Bausele have proven that independence, creativity, and authenticity can still shine in a world dominated by mega-brands. By embedding the spirit of Australia into each timepiece, Christophe has created a brand that transcends trends and speaks to the heart.

“When you see someone wearing a Bausele watch, you know there’s a story behind it,” he says. “It’s not just a watch—it’s a connection, a memory, a piece of something bigger.”

As he steps out of the ocean each morning, inspired by the beauty and resilience of Australia, Christophe knows that the best is yet to come.
