YOUR TIME YOUR STORY AND THE DAWN OF MARLÉO – Wristwatch Check

WRISTWATCH CHECK 2025

YOUR TIME YOUR STORY AND THE DAWN OF MARLÉO

In a world often captivated by horology’s giants, an independent watch brand from Melbourne quietly redefines the meaning of time and elegance. Marléo’s inaugural collection, Anaqa—aptly named after the Arabic word for “elegance”—seamlessly blends cultural heritage with modern sophistication.

With the tagline Your Time, Your Story, co-founders Shannon Day and Fadi Sarkis have set out not only to create watches but also to craft narratives, infusing their timepieces with stories as rich and intricate as the Middle Eastern culture they honour.

Shannon and Fadi’s journey began not with the ambition to emulate but to innovate, creating a space where craftsmanship and cultural homage intersect. They honour Melbourne’s multicultural vibrancy while embracing the intricate heritage of Middle Eastern artistry.

The result is Anaqa, a watch that is as versatile as it is profound, designed to transition effortlessly from a formal dinner to a casual gathering, capturing the essence of the modern gentleman.

THE STORY BEHIND ANAQA

“Anaqa is more than a watch,” Fadi explains. “It’s a reflection of values, a token of cultural and personal identity.” The design features, from the Eastern Arabic numerals to the chest crafted by Cairo artisans whose skills span four generations, every detail reflects a commitment to authenticity. Their design ideas are not mere tokenism but a tribute to lineage and intention.

Shannon reflects on his connection to watches, recalling stories of heirloom timepieces passed down through his family. “There’s something timeless about the engineering of a watch,” he muses. “It represents not just time but memory, connection, and craftsmanship.” For Shannon and Fadi, Anaqa contributes to that legacy, crafting a piece that tells a story with every tick of a moment passing in time.

DESIGNING WITH INTENTION

“There’s something remarkable about taking a vision from imagination to reality,” Shannon shares, his voice tinged with reverence. “It’s not just about making a product; it’s about crafting a story.” For Marléo, the story begins with their shared passion for timepieces and a desire to create something deeply meaningful.

The Anaqa collection reflects this ethos. The watch, limited to just 300 pieces globally, is designed to transcend trends and speak to the soul. Fadi elaborates, “We wanted to create a watch that doesn’t just sit on your wrist but connects with you emotionally. It’s about the stories it tells, the milestones it marks, and the craftsmanship it embodies.”

Good design is not a rushed endeavour. “Cultural elements must be genuine,” Fadi insists. “They need to come from a place of truth, a place of respect.”

INSPIRATION AND INNOVATION

Creating Anaqa was no small feat. The design process was as meticulous as it was inspired. Shannon recalls the hours spent deliberating over every detail, from the choice of materials to the watch’s overall aesthetic. “Design is about balance,” he explains. “You’re constantly weighing tradition against innovation.”

For Marléo, that balance is rooted in Melbourne’s vibrant multiculturalism and the intricate artistry of Middle Eastern culture. “Melbourne is incredibly diverse,” Shannon notes. “That diversity informs our designs, giving them depth and richness.”

Anaqa’s standout features include its Mediterranean Blue and Seashell White colourways, each limited to just 150 pieces. “We wanted these watches to feel special, to resonate with their wearers,” Fadi says. “The limited editions ensure that connection remains intimate.”

DEBUTING AT WRISTWATCH CHECK

Anaqa’s debut at the Wristwatch Check event is pivotal for Marléo. Held during Melbourne’s Grand Prix weekend, the event celebrates the passionate intersection of fine watches and luxury cars—a natural fit for Anaqa’s sophisticated appeal.

“Attending Wristwatch Check was an incredible experience,” Fadi reflects. “It allowed us to connect directly with the community and showcase our commitment to craftsmanship and cultural heritage.” Shannon agrees, adding, “It’s not just about selling watches; it’s about building relationships and sharing stories.”

The Fox Classic Car Museum added to the event’s allure. “It is the perfect setting,” Shannon says. “The blend of cars and watches creates an atmosphere of pure elegance.”

THE FUTURE OF MARLÉO

As Marléo looks ahead, the focus remains on creating timepieces that resonate deeply with their owners. “We’re not interested in chasing trends,” Fadi states. “Our goal is to make watches that stand the test of time, both in design and emotional connection.”

The brand’s following collection promises to expand on this vision. “We’re exploring dress watches and more intricate complications,” Shannon reveals. “But everything we do will stay true to our values: authenticity, craftsmanship, and cultural connection.”

This commitment extends beyond the watches themselves. Fadi explains, “We want Marléo to be a platform for stories and connections. Each watch is a node in a larger network of relationships and memories.”

THE LASTING IMPACT OF ANAQA

For Shannon and Fadi, seeing their watches become cherished parts of their customers’ lives is the true reward. “There’s no greater feeling than someone asking about your watch and being able to say, ‘I designed this,’” Shannon shares. “It’s humbling and inspiring.”

Anaqa’s success is a testament to the power of intention and authenticity. It’s a watch that doesn’t just tell time but tells a story—a story of cultural heritage, meticulous craftsmanship, and timeless elegance.

As Marléo continues to grow, one thing is clear: Anaqa is not just a timepiece. It’s a legacy. A reflection of the Middle Eastern spirit and the Melbourne heart, it stands as a beacon of what independent watchmaking can achieve. For those lucky enough to own one, Anaqa is not just a watch; it’s a piece of cultural history.
